Is polyurethane finish safe to use on a smoking pipe?

Question by Anneliese: Is polyurethane finish safe to use on a smoking pipe?
i don’t know if this is a silly question but oh well. i’m wondering.
Basically, is a polyurethane finish [i have minwax clear] safe to use on a pipe?
Either on a pipe that’s lost its shine or on something like say… a sculpey pipe that would otherwise be unusable without a heat protecting finish that would be safe to smoke out of.

Negative, it would not be safe to use minwax on a pipe. Once heated, it will produce a toxic gas.
