From Boston – Researchers have identified numerous proteins that are targeted by HIV to aid its replication within immune cells, a finding which could lead to the development of new treatments. To date the majority of treatments have been aimed directly at HIV, a virus having only 9 genes. However, its virulence is largely a function of its ability to take over the machinery of immune cells to assist in its replication. From Jakarta – Observing 7 clinical signs may help to significantly reduce infant mortality in developing nations. The rules include: difficulty feeding, presence of seizures, breathing rate greater than 60 per minute, moving only when stimulated, severe chest indrawing and a temperature greater than 37.5 C or less than 35.5 C. These guidelines may have a significant impact given that about 4 million infants die annually within their first month of life. And finally, from Maryland – Five percent of Americans aged 12 to 25 years admit to using over the counter cough and cold medicines to get high. Over 3 million admitted to using these medicines for recreational purposes, a similar number to those who have used LSD and significantly more than those who have tried methamphetamines.
