In middle class america is it better to disown your culture in order to be accepted?
Question by Alisha: In middle class america is it better to disown your culture in order to be accepted?
I notice that in middle class America many of your peers are white and majority of your superiors ie in the work place are white. It seems like alot of black born middle class children and adults tend to disown their black culture, almost removing anything associated with “blackness” from their life (besides their family). This also is said for alot of minority’s born into middle class backgrounds, asians are known for disowning their culture as well to be accepted by their white peers.
It is hard for blacks who are born into middle class America to date their own kind since often times they are used to being the “token black”. When placed in a group where its mainly black, middle class blacks often feel like the black sheep in the pack, (oh the irony) in this case the “white sheep” lol.
The media tells us that blacks are evil, ghetto, loud and most black men will end up in jail and the amount of eligible black men are “slim” as quoted by numerous “studies” and “statistics” by white media. This all tells middle class blacks that even dating another black can hurt the way society sees you and hurt your image, goals and dreams. Which is why alot of blacks who are born to middle class family’s tend to date inter racially because they fear that if their white peers sees them with another black you will get stereotyped and your life will not progress, you will find it harder to fit into white society and around whites.
So this in a way answers alot of questions when it comes to why certain blacks “sell out” when it comes to their own kind but it raises alot of other questions such as why does it seem like in middle class America you are more accepted if you disown your culture and why does society view you differently once you disown your culture and choose to not date blacks.
Im black born into a middle class family and i have seen many blacks go through this complex and choose whites over their own because they feel more accepted the less black they look. If they date someone white, white society sees them less of a burden then if they would have dated another black. At least it seems this way when a black women dates a white man. I have dated white men in the past and i notice this treatment.. when im with a black man society seems to think of me differently, i get the looks, the stares (white people staring thinking that we are ghetto or something)

most “sell out” because they feel it will give them more of an advantage when applying to certain schools or getting a job.
