Imprisoning drug addicts?

Question by By the Way…: Imprisoning drug addicts?
I don’t understand how anybody can be in favor of this… it serves zero purpose. Guards bring drugs into prison and drug addicts just get high anyway… so why punish someone for something and then put them in an institution where they can use the substance they are being punished for? why not help these people with real medical attention instead? why prison? Does the government just like to pretend that drugs don’t get smuggled into prison?

And to those of you who say “drug addicts are low lifes who don’t deserve help”, you obviously haven’t been in a situation where someone close to you became a drug addict because otherwise you wouldn’t be so incredibly insensitive.

Would you rather your tax money go toward helping these people or would you rather support imprisoning people for a medical issue (which fixes nothing)?
