CHARLOTTE — Two men arrested Wednesday night in connection with a hit-and-run accident involving a child may be in the country illegally.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say 8-year-old Keschon Figgs was hit while trying to cross North Sharon Amity Road.

“I was devastated when I got there and saw the child bleeding everywhere,” said Renata Underwood, who comforted the injured child and his sisters until police arrived.

Underwood said she saw the vehicle speed away. She and other witnesses helped police track down the driver, Juan Lopez and his passenger, Rogelio Islas, within an hour.

Lopez faces charges of hit-and-run and driving without a license. According to the sheriff’s office, Lopez was charged in 2002 for not having an operator’s license. Islas is also no stranger to the law. The magistrate’s office said the 31-year-old, who gave police the phony name Geovani Ramires on Wednesday, was charged in 2004 with DWI, possession of cocaine and reckless driving.

Both men have holds from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, meaning their legal status is in question.

The injured boy’s father, Tim Figgs, told News 14 Carolina that if the driver and passenger are confirmed to be illegal immigrants, “the government should be held responsible.”

“You’ve got to get a hold of the borders. My son now has six to 12 months of rehabilitation ahead,” he said.

Figgs said his son was scheduled to have surgery on his broken right leg Thursday afternoon. He had more than 20 stitches on his right forehead and cuts to his face.

Both Lopez and Islas are expected to be in court Friday. Lopez has an $ 8,000 dollar bond for the two separate charges and Islas’ stands at $ 2,000.
