Drug addiction often causes physical and chemical changes in your brain. The first few weeks to 90 days will be mostly detox, just physically clearing the drug out of your system. The next year is filled with physical, mental, and spiritual training, learning what the addiction has done to you and those around you, and learning how to live without that substance again. For example in the case of opiates (heroin, pain killers etc) your brain will no longer produce endorphins and uses the opiate instead, and it takes up to a year before your brain will resume producing endorphins. The longer the period of rehab, generally the better the chances of recovery.
