i need advice about dealing with hypochondria?

Question by nick: i need advice about dealing with hypochondria?
I am quite an anxious person and I think I am a hypochondriac. I tend to believe that I have the worst possible thing wrong with me from the smallest of symptoms. I have never been to the doctor about this and I am scared to for fear of being laughed at.

In the past year I have believed at varying times that I have had a brain tumor, diabetes (which I am going through again right now), Coeliacs disease, lung cancer, etc. I have also self-diagnosed gluten intolerance, yeast intolerance and hypoglycaemia. I suspect I am probably depressed, but I do not want to go on antidepressants. I have taken them before and I hated the way they made me feel.

A few months ago I had a chest x-ray and was diagnosed with an enlarged heart. This has come as a complete shock to me as I never knew this was a problem. I have an appointment with a specialist next month. I am really worried about this and I suspect it is why I am having a relapse into depression/hypochondria.

As I said I am worried about going to the doctor about my anxiety as I do not trust medication and my experiences in the past with doctors have not been positive, but this hypochondria and anxiety are ruling my life. I cannot believe I am even posting this on here.

I know I am obsessed with my health, but I can’t seem to stop myself. it feels like an addiction. I don’t know where to begin with sorting this out.

Your doctor cannot make you take anti depressants and I really support your decision to not use them. They have some pretty heavy side effects. I would still let you doctor know how you are feeling and tell him/her you don’t want anti depressants. You can ask for a referral(if your insurance requires one) to see a therapist. They can help alot and aren’t going to push you onto medication unless they really feel its necessary. Just let them know what you want and they’ll do the best they can to accommodate you. Hope this helps and good luck!
