Question by ketzerei_m: How similar are amphetamines and methamphetamines?
I suppose amphetamines are safer than meth to some extent, seeing as they are used for medical purposes. But how similar are the two?
And no, I’m NOT planning on doing meth, I was just wondering this.

Methamphetamines are a class of amphetamines. They differ by the addition of the functional methyl group. Neither are necessarily safe, however can in some cases be necessary. Both drugs originally have been used for medicinal purposes, as this is the way most recreational drugs are created.
But to answer your question, they are very similar compounds with quite similar effects. The most common medicinally used amphetamine is ephedrine (or psuedoephidrine), which is essentially a ‘speed’ derivative.
