If someone is drinking regularly, like continuously, withdrawals start at about 48 hours. How much and how often your roommate drinks will determine physical withdrawal symptoms. Binge drinking will not produce alcohol withdrawals if the binges are separated by a reasonable amount of time. Psychological dependency is a different issue, which does not produce physical withdrawals but has obvious consequences for the drinker and his/her friends if they are not imbibing as well.
