Haloperidol is a highly potent neuroleptic antipsychotic and a butyrophenone.

It also has strong sedative properties. It is 50X stronger than the next potent dopamine blocker: chlorpromazine. Sometimes haloperidol is called “vitamin H.”

Similar atypical neuroleptics you could try are clozapine, risperidone, olanzapine and ziprasidone and they all have lower side effects but cost much more. Prozac doesn’t work the same. And haloperidol is for schizophrenia or acute psychotic attacks or other severe neuropsychiatric symptoms, not pain

Chlorprothixene or chlorpromazine together with Prozac or another antidepressant help replace haloperidol.

Unpleasant side effects from abrupt withdrawal could be: agitation, anxiety, insomnia and nausea, rebound of psychotic symtpms and mood swing into mania.
