How is cannabis/marijuana a ‘gateway drug’?

Question by : How is cannabis/marijuana a ‘gateway drug’?
I’ve been smoking for well over 15 years now and I still haven’t approached the “gate”. When can I expect to start smoking meth and get strung out on heroin? I don’t know if it’s just my disciplined personality or what but I still just smoke weed. Are opponents of recreational cannabis use just pulling “facts” out of their a**holes?
