I have a toshiba laptop, and upgrading to vista has been a terrible mess. the laptop came with xp media center, and since upgrading to vista i found that a lot of my business and entertainment programs are inoperable, and my fingerprint reader (among other things) on the laptop are no longer working. i would like to find a way to go back to xp, but with all my files working exactly as they are now. is that possible?

unfortunately, no. you can put all your necessities on an external hard drive or burn it to a dvd.
