Alcohol is not itself addicting such as crack, meth, or heroine. Alcohol can become an addiction. If people find that when they drink, they are less inhibited or don’t think they have as many problems, they will drink to attain this feeling. So, it is an addiction by the person to the substance because of the outcome they receive.
But after being addicted to alcohol for many years, then your body’s functions adapt to deal with certain bodily functions (heart rate, blood density) and so for severe addicts of alcohol, they can’t just quit cold turkey, because their body will react inappropriately due to it’s compensation for being used to having so much alcohol in it’s system all the time.
