My dad has turned to alcohol ever since my mom divorced him. I don’t know what to do anymore. I want to help him so much. Sometimes he talks to me and tells me he wants to change. And I want to help him do that. It just breaks me to see him so dependent upon alcohol. He wasn’t like that before.

People always find a way to make themselves happy when something traumatic has happened to them. In your dad’s case, it’s the divorce that he’s having a hard time dealing with, and this has made him turn to alcohol. You have to understand that he’s also vulnerable and would need a lot of comfort from you. I suggest that you talk to him when he’s sober. Let him see what he’s doing to himself, and to you. Tell him that he can do way better if he stops being alcohol dependent. Tell him you’ll help him undergo addiction treatment. It would be a lot easier for him if he sees that you’re with him through this.
