While itâs true that the United States is one of the most industrialized nations on earth at present, that doesnât mean that a significant amount of the population doesnât still make its living off of the fruits of the earth. While the farming industry in America has been shrinking in the last 50 years, technically speaking, more and more upwardly-mobile city dwellers are starting their second lives by picking up parcels of land and going into business with organic farming. This new generation of farmers–coupled with the older generation thatâs still trying to hold on–has their own concerns involving everything from daily life to home security.

One of the biggest misconceptions of moving to a more rural area is that just because there are less people, things are automatically safer. While it is often true that living in the country is a great deal more secure than being in the center of a busy city with a booming crime rate, this doesnât mean that crime doesnât happen in the country. And in fact, when it does, it is a lot easier for the crime to be downright devastating. Because when your nearest neighbors are miles away, itâs a lot less likely that someone is going to see robbers entering your home and call the police. And even if they do, the nearest police detail might be a long enough drive away that the robbers will be gone by the time they get there.

So just as farmers must be self-sufficient in many other ways, they also have to be alert and proactive when it comes to home security. First and foremost, it is important to remember just how valuable your farming equipment actually is. From tractors and expensive tools to the chemicals that drug addicts might steal to cook up meth, there are a number of valuables on any working farm, excluding all of the creature comforts found in the farmerâs actual home.

The most important thing to do as a farmer is to never, under any circumstances, leave keys in your machinery or in your automobile. While it might be tempting, especially if youâre the only house for miles, to just leave the keys in the car, itâs practically offering it up as a present if someone does decide to poke around. Since removing keys from the ignition takes no time at all, there is no excuse to not beef up your home security by remembering to do this on a daily basis.

Likewise, itâs important to remember to lock up the car and the house while youâre out in the field. If anyone has been casing your farm, itâs going to become very clear when you are out of the house or in the field, especially during busy seasons, like calving or harvest time. Donât allow the distractions of daily farm life to get in the way of you locking doors, or you might be returning home to a house that has been robbed.

While country living is significantly less stressful and much safer than being in a crowded city, that doesnât mean that common sense has to fall by the wayside. If you take care to take care of your home and belongings, then youâll find that the country life is significantly more enjoyable.
