here’s No Winner?

here’s No Winner?

Who won the game last night? What is the par on that golf course? What is the score? How many laps remain in the race? What’s your best score? What’s your average? Without a system of numbers, there would not be an answer to most sports-related questions. There could be sports and the equipment necessary to participate. The point of sports, though, is competition. Competition results in a winner, however, there could be no winner without a score.

Scores and statistics

Each time a player or team scores, points are added. Throughout the game or match, points are calculated and at the conclusion, the side with the most points wins. The Yankees beat the Reds 10 to nine.

Points are established by the rules of the game but could not exist without numbers.

During a game or match, other numbers combine to form statistics. In baseball, the number of hits, runs batted in, errors, strike-outs, and other statistics combine to provide a numerical description of the game. Color commentators on radio or television use statistics. For example, it’s been 39 races since his last win or he’s had four wins this year.

In darts, there are numbers in each section. A player’s score is determined by the numbers he has hit with this darts.

Records: Win, Loss, Ties

Throughout each season, wins, losses and ties are compiled to form a record of the season. In boxing, this transfers to wins, losses, and knock-outs and represents an entire career. Other records that apply to an entire career include golf, tennis, and racing.

Averages

Averages are regularly used in sports. The number of hits divided by the number of times a player has batted provides a batter’s average.

To determine average miles per hour, the distance traveled is divided by the time required to cover the distance.

Other Uses

In football, basketball, racing, and other sports, numbers are used to quickly identify players (or drivers).

Results in swimming and track are based on the time required to finish the course. Smith beat the world record in the 200-meter with a time of 1 minute, 42.96 seconds.

Golf courses are advertised by total par, or how many strokes it should take to reach the hole. The par for each hole is added together to calculate the total par. When a golfer reaches a hole is less strokes, he has scored under par.
