Question by Beach Girl: Here for a better life when arrested suspicion of rape assault with deadly weapon burglary & steals dog ?,?
A man described by police as a Mexican national under investigation by immigration authorities and living in Seaside was arrested after a traffic stop Thursday evening as the suspect in a brutal home-invasion rape of a woman in her 50s that occurred in Seaside on Monday.
Ernesto Alonzo Avina, 23, was taken into custody about 6 p.m. when his car was stopped for a traffic violation at Sonoma Avenue and Soto Street, according to Deputy Police Chief Mick Vernon.

Vernon said Avina’s car was seen running a stop sign and was pulled over. He was taken into custody without incident.

The officer who stopped him had been briefed before going on patrol by detectives investigating Monday’s rape and burglary, Vernon said, recognized Avina as the suspect and called for assistance.

Detectives arrived, talked to Avina — initially identified as Gustavo Ramirez — and booked him into the city jail on suspicion of driving without a license and a possible immigration violation, Vernon said.

He was subsequently questioned by Spanish-speaking detectives at the jail and arrested on suspicion of rape, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and other charges, Vernon said, following a “positive interview” concerning the case.

The rape victim was treated at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula after the assault and released, he said.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were in Seaside on unrelated business, Vernon said, and told investigators

Vernon noted that one of the photographs that helped detectives identify him as a suspect came from surveillance cameras that filmed the theft of a dog at the SPCA of Monterey County on July 21.

In that case, according to SPCA spokeswoman Beth Brookhouser, a 3-month-old female chow-mix puppy was taken from the shelter about 2 p.m. by three men driving a minivan.

The pup, named Snuggles, was featured as Pet of the Week on KION TV the day before she was taken, and the theft was caught on camera in the shelter lobby with pictures showing all three men entering the door and another of Avina carrying the dog and walking behind one of the others.
