HELP! Windows recovery console… I’m Stuck!?
Question by Dd: HELP! Windows recovery console… I’m Stuck!?
I updated a driver which failed on installation. It then restarted, and instead of coming on, I got the message that I need to run the Windows Recovery Console to fix a missing system file.
So I followed the steps on the website, and everything went fine… up until I finished entering the administrator password (which I’m sure is correct). Then I get to the point where I need to type the commands. And, I know you can type “Help” and all that… but it doesn’t give me clear instructions on which I need to choose. I searched the internet too, but I’m afraid that I’ll loose everything that is on that PC.
Which command do I need to type in order to fix the broken system files but keep all my files on my hard drive???? PLEASE help! ALL my stuff is on there. I don’t have backups. I know it’s stupid of me. Just help me!
Also tell me things I SHOULD NOT do to prevent from loosing my files!
That hard drive is my life!

Hi,
The command that you use is this one :-
# From the recovery console, issue the following command:
expand D:\i386\filename_ C:\
where filename_ signifies the name of the file you want to extract, ‘D’ signifies the drive letter of the source you are extracting from and specifies the path of the folder to which you wish to extract the file.
So assuming that you have the windows installation disk in you cd rom drive that is were the file is to be extracted from and the path.
Then you add the file name that you need to replace, then the C:\ indicates where you want it to be put.
After the file has been extracted, type exit to leave the recovery console, remove the Windows Setup floppy or Windows CD-ROM and restart the system normally.
Does that help at all?
Once you have the windows running OK again the very first thing you must do is to burn your vital data to a cd or dvd in case of an emergency where you loose windows altogether.
The next immediate step is to buy an external usb hard drive and set up a backup routine to ideally copy your entire system onto the backup drive every night or at least the vital files!!!
Just mail me if you need more help.
