Having problems with ‘positive only’ training?
Question by Lola!: Having problems with ‘positive only’ training?
First of all, it’s not me. I have trained four other dogs, and used a “good = reward. bad = punishment” routine with them. They were all labs, but three were from the shelter and one was from a local rescue volunteer, who adopted it as a puppy. Their background was unknown, and they were stubborn, but I rubbed their noses in “it”, and rewarded when they pottied outside.
They show no signs of “abuse” and they’re amazingly happy.
Recently my oldest dog, Loco, died. He was 17 years old, and had some heart problems. His joints were stiff and his eyesight was bad, so it was maybe all the better.
Nonetheless my other three labs are extremely depressed. So I got a puppy. A friend of mine said I should try positive only training, meaning you only reward and don’t discipline.
So i have been. For the last three months, I’ve been crate training her. I started it at every four hours, going potty. Then when she continued with accidents, moved to three. Now it’s at 1 1. She goes potty in her crate, on the floor(WHILE i’m watching her. If i pick her up and carry her out she just continues all the way to the door.)
I feel like saying “NO NO! KNock it off!” And rubbing her nose in it, swatting her, or sprayign her with water. But I am trying hard at this positive only kick.
Any suggestions at all, or am i on my own 😛

First of all, rubbing a puppies nose in their own pee does NOT teach them anything. Most of the time it makes the puppy too nervous to urinate when they are around you or it can cause nervous urinating. Puppies find it hard to associate a nose rub with no peeing. You need to teach your pup that the RIGHT place to go potty is outside.. Treat or reward as soon as she goes in the right place, that’s all I can say.
