Getting Away from the Alcohol/Party Lifestyle?

Question by Joseph Pillmore: Getting Away from the Alcohol/Party Lifestyle?
I’m in my mid 20s and have been drinking fairly heavily since I reached legal drinking age (21). By this, I mean that I binge drink with friends and often consume 10+ drinks over the duration of a night out. I do this once or twice per week, typically on Fridays and/or Saturdays. I’m growing tired of this lifestyle and the consequences, so I’d like to move on beyond it.

I’m fairly clueless on what to do on a weekend night if I’m not out partying. The lifestyle is so ingrained into me that I can’t remember what else there is to do for entertainment. This, along with a lack of friends who share the same outlook, has caused me to fail in many prior attempts to stop drinking.

Has anyone else made a similar lifestyle change? How did you stay busy and what did you find to keep yourself occupied? I’ve searched online and asked on alcohol recovery forums, but they typically recommend things like reading books, scrap-booking, and cooking. For a thrill-seeking male in his 20s, this will not work. I already go to the gym on weekdays. If I’m at home on a weekend night, I’m bored out of my mind.

Any advice from someone who succeeded at this?

There are MANY groups out there with interests other than getting trashed.

There are sites like MeetUp.com, YahooGroups, etc. etc. where you can find “Discussion Groups” on everything from Mystery Science Theatre 3000 to Erotic Japanese Rope Bondage and everything in between.

If I can find a group for women under 28 interested in the BDSM Lifestyle, I’m sure you can find SOMETHING you are in to!
