“Friend For Life” Tribute to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center

In 1994, Howard Brown Health Center awarded Illinois Masonic Medical Center the Friend for Life Award for Treatment Center 371. That centers clinical name reflected the stark time when many in the local community knew it simply as “the AIDS Ward”. Thankfully, much has changed since then. With the advent of antiviral therapies introduced in 1996, care and treatment for HIV/AIDS has seen innovations that manage illness and extend full lives. There is no longer the same critical need for a Treatment Center 371. After years of common service to our community, the invaluable alliance between Howard Brown and Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center (AIMMC) marks nearly a quarter century. Today, community needs call for Howard Brown, like Illinois Masonic, to be so much more. As our hospital partner, AIMMC provides mammograms to lesbians who come to Howard Brown for screening and they serve as an important referral partner provider of specialized gynecological care. Leading our partnership on behalf of AIMMC is Dr. Michael Swarzman. When Howard Brown calls with a new need, an idea for improved care, or in search of new solutions to continuing challenges, Dr. Swarzman is always on board with creative partnership to make things happen. Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, located on Chicagos north side is one of the states largest, most comprehensive nonprofit medical centers. Illinois Masonic Medical Center offers a range of medical specialties and is nationally recognized
