Drug addiction causes many people to create all kinds of misconceptions in their minds with many of them not having a foundation in reality. Add to that mental health disorders and a need for dual diagnosis treatment, and there are a lot of questions and misunderstandings. The Director of the National Institute of Drug Abuse says, “There is a unique disconnect between scientific facts and the public’s perception of drug addiction.” He further explains that a person, no matter how old or young they are, that is involved in drug abuse will have their brain function modified when on drugs. This same drug user doesn’t have any control over the behavioral changes that take place in them when recreational drug use turns into an addiction. Without drug rehabilitation, families are disrupted, jobs are lost, health is compromised and mental health disorders can set in. Basically, the individual is playing a form of Russian Roulette with their life.

Dr. Leshner continues in his findings and states that a drug addict without any form of drug rehabilitation is like “flipping a switch” in their type of behavior. The person can act perfectly normal and then one day their personal hygiene, work ethic, emotions and how they relate with others degrades. Leshner is adamant that people understand that a very stable human being that becomes addicted to drugs literally has a different brain state and is unable to think and act other than what they are doing.

Sometimes, a person needs a dual diagnosis treatment, as stated above, because they are dealing with a mental illness as well as a drug addiction. Mental health disorders and needing drug rehabilitation go hand in hand more times than not. Anyone who has witnessed a person close to them with a true drug addiction can testify that they no longer know them. Add to that any of the mental health disorders and you have a situation on your hands that needs serious and immediate drug rehabilitation.

If one of several mental health disorders are discovered while treating the drug addict, then dual diagnosis treatment is warranted. This is why it is very important that when choosing a treatment center that the family of the patient be sure that the center is qualified to handle every possibility that drug abuse brings with it. Only then can you be sure that the abuser is headed toward a full recovery.
