Do you think the U.S.’s prohibition of marijuana was originally based on misinformation and racist propaganda?

Question by (D)amn the Bill of (R)ights: Do you think the U.S.’s prohibition of marijuana was originally based on misinformation and racist propaganda?
These are all quotes from Harry J. Anslinger who was considered America’s first “drug czar”. He served in the U.S. government for 32 years from 1930-1962.

“There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing, result from marijuana usage. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers and any others.”

“…the primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races.”

“Marijuana is the most violence-causing drug in the history of mankind.”

“Reefer makes darkies think they’re as good as white men.”

“Marihuana leads to pacifism and communist brainwashing.”

“Two Negros took a girl fourteen years old and kept her for two days under the influence of hemp. Upon recovery she was found to be suffering from syphilis.”

“Colored students at the Univ. of Minn. partying with (white) female students, smoking [marijuana] and getting their sympathy with stories of racial persecution. Result: pregnancy”
Marijuana was referred to as mari”h”uana back in the 30s and 40s.
“Its the general public’s fear of druggies.”

But it would seem the reason they originally feared the “druggies” is because they believed them to be synonymous with black/brown culture which they believed to be synonymous with rape and murder.
superA………..”degenerate races” isn’t racist?
rounder……….”so a handful of quotes taken out of context equates to misinformation and racist propaganda?”

WOW. It is truly amazing how people can rationalize this away.

“doesn’t the fact that even obama is for continued prohibition make your claim irrelevant?”

No. That’s why the question included the words “originally based on”. NOW the war on drugs is BIG BUSINESS for prisons, police budgets who need a reason to continue to need more money, court systems, lawyers etc. Obama protects the status quo.
ruth…………….”No, if I had to guess, I’d say it was reaction to the hippie culture.”

I would agree that the War on Drugs was a reaction to hippie culture. But the war on weed started way before the 1960s.
rounder……”i would be surprised if alcohol and tobacco are not prohibited completely in another 10 years.”

The U.S. DID THAT ALREADY. It was 10X worse than legalization could ever dream of being. Why do you think they repealed the 18th amendment?
rounder…………”it couldn’t possibly be that people don’t want another substance legalized that undermines and burdens society?”

America’s b*tch about their nanny state, then b*tch when you threaten to take it away. STRANGE to say the least.
