Do you think that just because an addiction/attachment is socially acceptable it is less harmful?

Question by Love aka tree kisser: Do you think that just because an addiction/attachment is socially acceptable it is less harmful?
For example, someone is battling with an attachment to something but is still a high functioning member of society. As in…they are addicted to exercise or money or work. They live in a mansion and are very respected in their community.

With another person it is very obvious to the world their attachment/addiction is harming them. They are addicted to methamphetamine or gambling to the point they are nearly homeless. Or they are addicted to having kids, remember the octomom? Something like that.

Is one less harmful than the other just because they still fit in? On the level of our collective consciousness…are these attachments equally harmful in blocking a rise in our conscious awareness as a species?

***Asked from another angle, do you think the attachments that society deems ‘okay’ aka acceptable, are they actually more harmful because of the disguise perhaps?*** Kind of like ‘blind certainty’…?
I am not speaking of ‘problematic to the functioning of society’…I couldn’t care less about that lol. I am speaking of holding humanity back from realizing our true self…aka a planet wide pouring in of light in these dark ages…
Exactly Nick!!! That is exactly what I am talking about…you hit the nail on the head lol. 1. great example about food addictions and 2. these addictions of the mind are distracting us from realizing our true self.
