Do alcoholics go to Al Anon?

Question by Katiecakes: Do alcoholics go to Al Anon?
I know AlAnon is a support group for friends and families of addicts… but to addicts themselves ever go to Al Anon? I thought I remember someone telling me that alcoholics/addicts are actually discouraged from attending these meetings; that they are specifically meant for loved ones.

Would a recovering addict go to Al Anon in order to get relationship help/advice?

Yes, he or she can. And should be encouraged to attend.

Most alcoholics’ lives are also being affected by the disease of alcoholic due to loved ones’ disease.

But when alcoholics attend Al-anon, he/she should put the focus on the principles of Al-anon.

And when he/she goes to AA, then he/she should practice the principles and AA 12 steps.

Hope this is helpful. Good luck.
