Dealing With Frustrations
What do you do when you’re frustrated? Some people drink alcohol or do drugs when they find themselves frustrated. Little do they realize that there are other, much more healthy ways to deal with frustration. To begin, you must first analyze what is at the root of your frustration. It may be something to do with relationship problems. It may have something to do with your job, your boss or your finances. This all ties into the fact that we need to learn how to better deal with our emotions.
If we are emotionally unstable, then we will find that we are ill-equipped to make wise decisions. Frustration most often arises out of our inability to deal with unexpected stresses and/or emotions. Therefore, it is imperative that we figure out a healthier way to combat stress. Stress and frustration can take a toll on a person, sometimes driving the person to use drugs and/or alcohol. The next time you are frustrated, stop for a minute. Think about why it is that you are frustrated. If you have to, get out a piece of paper and write down all of the things in your life at that moment that are frustrating you. Next to each thing that you’ve written down, jot down a possible solution to the problem. You’ll find that as you begin to rationalize and think things through, you’ll realize that things aren’t nearly as bad as you once thought. Some people find that it is more helpful to get out their frustrations by putting a pillow over their face and screaming as loudly as they can. Others still find that exercise is the best cure when frustrated.
Not only is exercise good for you, but it is a great and healthy way to work out frustrations. Studies have shown that when you exercise, your body releases endorphins, which are chemicals in your body that make you feel good. Sometimes all that is needed is to go for a quick 20-30 minute walk or run. You’ll find that you are refreshed and better able to tackle your problems head on. If you’re still frustrated, try talking to a friend or loved one. If you do not feel comfortable discussing your problem with your family or friends, you may need to seek outside counsel with a psychologist or counselor. The one thing you do not want to do is keep something to yourself. Frustrations can easily turn into big problems if left unmanaged. Figure out what it is that is frustrating you, get to the bottom of it and then take it from there. Know that you are in control of your emotions, and therefore how things affect you or not.
Another great way to ease frustrations is to smile. Even if you don’t feel like it, if you force a smile, it somehow makes you feel better. Listen to some relaxing music. Meditate. Help other people who have bigger problems by volunteering at a shelter or outreach group. All of these things will serve to help you better manage your life.
