Cocoon (original)
I wrote this song after an acquaintance of mine told me he was trying to kick a heroin habit. Later that year, I helped get a different friend/acquaintance into rehab for heroin/cocaine addition. My first glances at addiction awoke me to its darkness. You know you have your way with dreams. But you’re only a patchwork of shadows. You’ve got your grip on a lonely few. And I’m gonna fight you to the end. Your path that he’s on leads away from the world. The shadows in your gaze obscure all the ways of escaping. Your tongue lies heavy on her neck. And you’re strangling out her last hopeful yearning. Your path that she’s on leads away from me. She’s been missing for a week and a day. There’s no answer to my phone calls. Well I know she’s passed out on her bed and she’s been there since last Tuesday. Your path that he’s on leads away from him. I’m coming to your town. You’ve always known that I’ve always been around. I’m your cocoon. He’s slipping out of your fingers. He’s no longer hiding from his pain. It’s all starting over with this sunrise. And I’m hopeful that he’s well.
