Can you get addicted to prescription medication?

Question by some guy: Can you get addicted to prescription medication?
I know that some people abuse their prescription medication, but is it really possible to get addicted to it? My understanding of drug addiction is that you’re unable to function without the drug. If somebody is abusing their script for amphetamines or barbiturates, then they’ll run out of the drug much quicker than prescribed, so they’ll always have a much longer forced abstinence period where they’ll go through withdrawal and recovery. Anybody with clinical experience expand on this?
