Dopamine and Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a chronic illness and severe brain disorder that has affected many people. In men it usually occurs earlier in life (adolescence to early twenties), whereas with women symptoms are not normally shown until later on (thirties to forties). When untreated it can make daily life very difficult in many aspects, and many people with this illness are much more likely to commit suicide. Treatments work on the dopamine receptors in the brain. “For years schizophrenia was explained by the “dopamine hypothesis” which suggests that psychosis (and other symptoms) resulted from a functional excess of dopamine…” This theory has been largely abandoned. There are, as a recent textbook explains, no simple neurotransmitter-illness relationships (1).
Many people confuse schizophrenia with “split personality,” or otherwise known as Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD). Schizophrenia and MPD are two completely different things and are not related at all whatsoever. Other uneducated people seem to argue that schizophrenia is not even a real disease or mental illness, but that it is just in the minds of those searching for an excuse for radical thoughts and actions. When it is in fact a proven scientific psychological illness that affects people worldwide. “The biological basis for psychotic signs and symptoms in schizophrenia is not known. Although abnormalities in several neurotransmitters have been found in the brains of patients with schizophrenia. Much attention has been focused on the roles of dopamine and glutamate neurotransmission underlying the disease” (2).
Today schizophrenia is a severely debilitating psychiatric disorder recognized and undergoing treatments all over the world. It often results in timely hospitalizations and is debated as a burden on medical resources. “Since the introduction of chlorpromazine in the 1950’s, the number of antipsychotic drugs available has notably increased. By the 1980’s, several conventional or first-generation antipsychotic drug development had been developed and were found to be effective in treating the positive symptoms of schizophrenia, such as delusions and hallucinations” (3). Although in the more recent years, developing accurate anti-psychotic drugs have been less successful. This is most likely due to poorly defined understanding of the pharmacology of available drugs. The failures of drugs early in trial and increased cost of drug development have also slowed the process of finding helpful new alternatives for the treatment and cure of schizophrenia. It can also be very difficult to diagnose someone with this disease because there is not just one single symptom that is always present. However, there are a few symptoms that make strong suggestions that a person may have schizophrenia, such as: feelings of being plotted against, hearing voices talking to the person or to each other.
why do people even leave answers at all if they’re just stupid answers like this??? can anyone ACTUALLY help? i really need help with a conclusion..
