Can I use “ONE” of the 3 bedrooms in my house as a home office and write off a percentage of my mortgage?

Question by marcecore: Can I use “ONE” of the 3 bedrooms in my house as a home office and write off a percentage of my mortgage?
I am a business owner and I use one of my bedrooms as a home office.

My house is 1700 Sq feet.

The bedroom I use as a home office is about 180 sq feet.

Can I do a simple math equation of 180 / 1700 which is about 10.5 %

My mortgage is 1500 per month.

Can I write off the $ 157 or so off of my taxes as a business expense?

What would I call the account that its charged to in Quickbooks?

Also, would this 10.5 percent be based on just principal and interest or the total mortgage which includes taxes and insurance?
Just curious, how would the IRS know if you had a TV in there or you slept in the room?

Yes, you can. I am not sure on the exact percentage, but as long as you conduct some of your business at home and in that office you should be able to write a % off.
