To practice as a Social Worker in the UK, along with an appropriate qualification, for example a Degree in social work, you will also need valid GSCC (general social care council) registration.
If you would like to work in a substance environment, many employers will require you to have some level of previous experience. This can either be paid or voluntary. If you are new to the field then there are various ways in which you can gain this experience. Simply searching for your local drug and alcohol charities and viewing websites will give you an idea of who does what and how the system works. Your local charities may also run voluntary placements and training schemes which is a great way of taking the first step. Specialist agencies such as www.servicecare.org.uk may also have temporary placements which are also a great way of gaining valuable, paid working experience.
