Babies can be born addicted to cocaine, which causes them pain and makes them inconsolable. The may have seizures if not weened slowly from the drug with morphine. The most likely birth defect is to the respiratory system, especially with crack. Babies can range from near-normal to almost no lung function at all. Heart defects are common. Physical defects are fairly common. Neurological defects are almost unavoidable but may not be fully apparent until later. There is a syndrome associated with prenatal cocaine that causes wild mood swings and violent outbursts. It becomes apparent by age 2. It used to be called early onset bipolar disorder but I believe it has a more proper name now that it is better understood.
