Can Anybody Out There Help Me Stop Drinking?
“I know I had this problem for quite some time now and I think that I should really quit. But is there somebody out there who can help me stop drinking?”My friend asked me this question and I willingly obliged myself to give him an honest answer—”yes, there are people who can help you with that, I said.”
Being hooked on the habit of drinking alcohol is not really a big problem, unless the person knows that he wants to stop and wants to get help.
Knowing one’s current position can help make a decision on how to take on the road to recovery. Accepting having this moral weakness can be difficult as there is shame and guilt involved. Admission from the abuser will make it easy enough to deal with the problem of helping out in the process and the person to talk about is the family doctor. The sooner you get help, the lesser chances of demoralization can set in, thus, increasing the chances of recovery.
Some people are hesitant to talk about their alcohol problems so there is a need in coaxing them to juice out information so as to help ease the process of rehabilitation. Questions may be asked by the physician or the health care provider and those questions have to be answered to determine the gravity of the addiction and the treatment it deserves.
Treatment could involve several phases and these can be detoxification, medication, and individual or support groups.
Detoxification involves the cleansing of alcohol out from your system. In this phase all possible alcohol content in your blood stream and your organs have to be flushed out to make way for overcoming physiological and psychological addiction.
Medication is when the doctor prescribes the necessary medicines to ease out the process of detoxification. This can be injecting essential nutrients in the body to alleviate suffering caused by the Detox process and likewise to replace toxins with real substances that the body need.
Individual or support groups can further help in treating the dreaded social disease. It does not only take Detox and medication to help a person recuperate. It is in this phase that counseling occurs. They would be asked reasons why they took on to this bad liquid; the effects that it caused the mind and body of an individual will be tackled. This is sometimes done by a single therapist, and sometimes done with a group. Shouts like: ‘help me stop drinking’ can be heard inside the discussion room.
The groups consist of recovering alcoholics, also under the supervision of a therapist. Discussions within the group could bring enlightenment as they speak of each other’s misdealing in life.
Detox, medication and counseling can be done on an outpatient basis depending on the severity of the situation, or on a treatment facility or hospital.
It takes a lot of courage by helping these problematic individuals to heal emotionally and psychologically. Talking to them and telling them how you appreciate the move of helping themselves get cured is one big statement that they will never forget. Remind them that family and friends will always be there to help and love them.
Moral support is very vital to the patient who is being treated with addiction. I, myself, have experienced this. As my friend never knew where to find help, I talked him out on turning to his family for the needed advice and family support. At first he didn’t budge, not knowing how they would react if at one time he dials the phone and tell them: help me stop drinking. But I knew I made the right decision in helping him find his way home.
