Can a drug user have a happy and successful relationship?

Question by All other Stuff: Can a drug user have a happy and successful relationship?
Someone I know just ended a relationship with a guy after dating for two straight years. They’re relationship had been strained from the very beginning, but somehow he managed to develop feelings of love for and visa versa. She ended the relationship because, basically he wasn’t a good boyfriend, he cheated earlier on in the relationship, he has been caught in several lies, he doesn’t have a good relationship with his father, he doesn’t have a high level of respect for his mother although he does love her, he had never had a successful relationship with any woman as he says he doesn’t respect most women, he is a user and a manipulator—but more so than not, the guy is a complete drunk and he does cocaine. According to him, cocaine is “better” than other “hard” drugs such as meth, heroin and crack cocaine because, one can still work and party and not have it affect they’re everyday lives. He also said that cocaine is like weed—except cocaine makes you feel like you are superman or superwoman…like you can do anything in the world and that’s why he likes taking it. I told his ex girlfriend that she made the right choice in leaving him even if you take away all the negative things he has done because, the drugs and alcohol that is so dominant in his life, would have made the relationship even more difficult—she would never, ever be able to trust the guy.

She was once worried that he would go off and find someone else and make a better life with that person, but as I explained to her, I have never known someone addicted to drugs and alcohol to have a happy-go-lucky life, let alone a successful relationship—most of them end up alone and miserable because, of the addiction itself.

Does anyone think that someone who abuses drugs and alcohol can have a successful relationship?
