Because of the rising tide of drug violence in Mexico what are the chances of a US ‘intervention’?

Question by Noah H: Because of the rising tide of drug violence in Mexico what are the chances of a US ‘intervention’?
In 1916 the US sent General Pershing across the border to hunt down Poncho Villa. We never got him, just as we’ve never got Bin Laden..so far at least. Still, the effort was made. My Uncle Max rode with Pershing, but that’s a different story. I’m writing an article on the possibility of this kind of action, so a little ‘pre-publication’ feedback would be appreciated.

I think it’s highly unlikely. In the first place, we can’t afford it. In the second place, going down and wiping out the current cartels would simply allow new ones to take their place. The cartels will continue as long as drugs are kept illegal here. Keeping drugs illegal makes them easy to profit from. If the only people you can get them from are criminals, you can’t really expect anything but more organized crime.
