Cocaine hydrochloride is a chemical that is typically known as crack. Some people process cocaine chemically in order to remove the hydrochloride– this is a process called freebasing. This is called “crack” because it snaps/cracks when smoked or heated. Cocaine, however, is joined with sodium bicarbonate or ammonia to create chips, rocks, or powder that can be smoked or snorted. Crack produces a more intense high, but its effects are more temporary than cocaine’s.

Many users choose to use crack because unlike powder cocaine, crack is more convenient, easy to conceal, has a wide availability, and is a lot cheaper than cocaine.
