Question by willmin: are the spiritually minded people more acutely affected by their internal dialogue? or is religion a…?
Or is religion a prehistoric form of psychology? I’m asking because I picked up a book from the “Self Help” section of half priced books called “The Secret of Letting Go” and it actually helped me quit a bunch of stuff and make advancement in being HAPPY and at peace with myself, but then it through my a curve and started talking about the Source, or the Universe, or the Absolute… bunch of references to a god or Higher Being and quotes from several religions. And I was like “wow, hmm. I can’t deny that this knowledge helped me see my problems clearly, but I’m not necessarily a spiritual person so… Dude! Was Jesus, Buddha, all those enlightened and chosen people just good shrinks?”

I believe for some people the idea of a higher being decreases anxiety, particularly if you think that higher being is on your side. Some people feel better knowing there is a God who is in control and that they will get to go to heaven when they die. So, in that sense they (or the creators of religion) were good “shrinks.”
