An Ancient Legend Returns In A Poignant Modern Tale

San Jose, CA (PRWEB) July 29, 2004

Outskirts Press today announced the release of a new novel, “Descent” written by Donald R. Avoy. Based on the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice, it tells a heart-rending story of young love destroyed by heroin addiction. After the hero and heroine meet and fall in love, a jealous rival takes his revenge by enticing her to try heroin, and for reasons later revealed, she quickly becomes addicted. She descends into the dark, pitiless world of addiction and flees. He consults a wise man who teaches him about heroin addiction and its treatment. Armed with this information, he finds her and begins the struggle between addiction and treatment which is waged relentlessly, until the final conclusion.

The author is a physician who works in a methadone clinic in San Jose, California. But, not just a physician who happens to write a book, Dr. Avoy has completed several other works of fiction, and considers this to be a unique challenge. “The neurobiology of addiction is enormously complicated, and is not well understood, even by the medical community. Our progress in dealing with addiction in our society will be limited until there is more complete and broader understanding.”
