A question about alcoholism and drug addiction?
Question by Penny: A question about alcoholism and drug addiction?
I have a son that is 30 years old and is addicted to drugs and alcohol. Right now, he is in a hospital about an hour and a half from here being prepped for exploratory surgery. He is throwing up blood and his liver may be failing. His friends have asked me not to come because I agitate him, and he is already very agitated. I don’t mean to, but it seems that he hears everything I say as an accusation or criticism. For instance, if I ask him how his son is doing, he thinks I am accusing him of not taking proper care of his son.
His friends tell me not to pressure him, but it’s hard. The doctor says he has less than 5 years to live if he doesn’t make immediate changes. Should I continue to try to get him into rehab, or just ignore the situation?

Try and talk to one of his friends and explain your worries. Explain what you think he needs and try to get them to help him. Or ask them to talk to him for you. You could also write him a letter expaining how you feel. Good luck and enjoy the time with him if you can no matter how long that is x
