Almost 50% of heroin addicts die prematurely, according to the results of one of the first long-term studies of heroin addiction. Researchers followed 581 male addicts over a 33-year period. During this time 49% of the original group died from causes such as drug overdoses, suicide, accidents and chronic liver disease.
