Acute alcoholic cardiomyopathy is usually reversible when the alcohol abuse is discontinued. This should be referred to as alcoholic cardiomyopathy even though it’s pathologically indistinguishable from other dilated cardiomyopathies. Long-term damage is related to the frequency and duration of the alcohol consumption. If this has already progressed to congestive heart failure, the prognosis tends to be poor. Some people show improvement in a matter of months but most require a year or more and it depends on patient compliance, the right medications, proper nutrition, substance abuse counseling and family/friend support.
