Spiritually speaking, Does the high suicide rate among psychologists demonstrate the failure of human wisdom?
Question by ChrisP: Spiritually speaking, Does the high suicide rate among psychologists demonstrate the failure of human wisdom?
If human reasoning is so much better than belief in God and His ways, then you would think that humanistic psychology would be effective at eliminating suicide and mental problems. Yet that is rarely the case. Religious based programs, especially those which are Christ centered, have a much higher success rate than secular programs in delivering people from depression or addiction, as is proven by the statistics.
Now, I am not saying that there are not suicides among those who are religious. And I agree that sometimes it is a result of a genuine physical ailment resulting in a chemical imbalance. What came first, the chicken or the egg. In some cases of chemical imbalance, could the depression not have started as a long-term mental problem which in time cause permanent physical damage?
But you would think that humanistic psychologists would have a very low suicide rate, if humanistic solutions were so great. But they don’t.
I also speak from personal experience as one who struggled with suicidal depression from the age of 10 until about 24. At that time my faith in God reached a point where suicidal impulses were gone.
This is from statistics I read many years ago, and do not know of a current source.
Nor did I say that their suicide rate is higher than the general population. It runs about the same rate. My point is, you would think it would be significantly lower if it was so great.
