1996 Jeep Cherokee won’t crank, “Gen” light?

Question by Sky G: 1996 Jeep Cherokee won’t crank, “Gen” light?
Hello,
I have a problem with a 96 jeep cherokee country. When I go to start it sometimes, it is completely dead, as in won’t even try to crank. And a “Gen” light comes on when turning the key. All of the electronics come on though, a/c and radio. But can not get it to crank. I am wondering if this is a starter problem? I don’t beleive it is the alternator.

There are a couple fuses that you can check that will keep it from cranking. One will say ECM or ECI fuse. The other is the starter relay in the fuse box under the hood. I would also go through and clean all the battery connections from the battery all the way till you get to the starter. You would be surprised how fast a dirty connection can stop you from starting. One day it will start and the next day it won’t. That is where I would start. I am not positive that it has them but you might check the wires going to the starter and check to see if there is any fusible links. They are round cylinder shaped spots in the line that can burn out to protect other components from shorting. You won’t have any trouble seeing if they are burnt out or not.
