Rise from the Ashes
funds.gofundme.com Rise From the Ashes is the true story of three people who share three things in common: they are all drug addicts, they are all in recovery – and they are all deaf. Willy, who is illiterate, did not have an ASL interpreter to meet with a public defense lawyer. He is currently in jail in Austin, Texas and was previously in prison for 14 years. Makala is in her fifth month of sobriety in a recovery house in San Diego. Renny has recovered from his drug habit after being in prison for 7 years, and has dedicated his life to fixing a flawed penal and rehabilitation system, which provides little resources for those who are deaf. Rise From The Ashes explores the trials and tribulations of being deaf in a hearing world and being trapped in government system that has little regard for the difficulties of being deaf. The story takes us into their world to experience their loss, despair and ultimately their hope and triumph in overcoming insurmountable obstacles.
