How to help my friend with his returning addiction?

Question by PoolYule: How to help my friend with his returning addiction?
My good friend “Chris” recently overcame his 4 year addiction to marijuana and various other drugs. We attended high school together where he was constantly in trouble for misconduct and possession, and was eventually expelled in 11th grade. During that time, he had been in various rehab clinics and at one point even tried to burn down his parents’ house. During our senior year, he attended another rehab clinic and also a religious school, where he got clean and made a relationship with god. I didn’t see him all that year.
We’re now in our freshman year of college. We met up again by chance, not knowing we went to the same school, and started hanging out. When I met him he was completely happy, optimistic, and very fun-loving and cheerful. It was a fantastic change; he informed me that he was now guided by god’s love, and wanted to work with other recovering addicts and play music for them. I was very happy for him.
Recently, though, he has informed me that he has returned to his old girlfriend, with whom his relationship was bad. He has taken up smoking cigarettes, and also smoked some weed last week with a friend. He says he can no longer hear god speaking to him, and says he feels lost. When I try to encourage him to speak to his parents, his pastor, or someone at the rehab clinic, he says that it’s no good and he knows he’s going to relapse.
I am not sure what to do. He used to be such a reasonable and optimistic person; he’s come so far, more than most addicts do. He overcame so much. I hate to see him act so weak and hopeless. I don’t know what caused this change. I am not a religious person, so it’s hard for me to relate. I feel helpless. Any advice would be a world of help.

Not everyone can find hope in God,its a fact of life. As for your friend ask him just these simple question,
1. Ask him whats wrong…and just ask him and out if your really concerned .
2. Even if God doesn’t speak to you he is still there….watching.
3. Life is a blessing, you could have very well died from drugs. And if your going to spend your life puffing it away…at least help someone you feel is in more trouble than you
