Dear Dylan:
I am so sorry for the trauma you experienced three years ago. The feeling of betrayed trust, the disappointment and disgust, must be terribly difficult to move beyond. Is your father still a part of your everyday life? Does your mother know what happened? I hope that you have somehow been able to get some kind of psychological support in dealing with the void that your father’s selfishness and heartlessness have caused. In case you are dealing with this all alone, I hope you will use one of the youth advocacy programs that exist in various parts of the country.
In addition to the original trauma, you now have the problem of gaining control over the substances you may have adopted to take his place. And in that case, the cure has shown itself to be even worse than the disease.
You might try Narcotics Anonymous. It is similar to Alcoholics Anonymous, but it is a support group for persons who have had problems controlling their addictions to drugs.
These are 12-step programs, and they base their success on looking to a higher power for help.
There is also a program called SDAxA, or Regeneration, sponsored by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. People with all kinds of addictions are welcome to attend. In this 12-step program, God is held up as the Highest Power.
It is good to work with people who have the same struggles that you do. Many in the process of recovery have found great strength in moving toward victory over addiction.
I pray that God will guide you to a truly helping source and strengthen you to overcome the living nightmare and to live the kind of life that you hope for. Please email me if in any way I might be a help to you.
