Question by ♥Ayita Zuleika Reyes♥: Why do people say that the 1950s were the “Happy Days”?
I’m glad that 1960s happened. If life was like the 1950s I would rebel at every moment. Here are some swell and happy facts about the 1950s that I read from my English class book called “The Sixties”:

-The term “spousal abuse ” did no exists in the 1950s, men would commonly beat and rape their spouses.
-Girls were forbidden to wear pants and cut their hair short, they would be called tomboys or sluts if they did so.
-High schools expelled pregnant girls.
-There were homes for pregnant unmarried White girls can go and have their babies and they could return to school, but Black women who were young, unwed and pregnant could not go to these homes and they were forced to give birth to the child and quit school.
-No abortion rights for women, even in cases of rape and even if the mother was dying from the pregnancy.
-Raped women couldn’t really press charges, there was a case in 1959 when a Michigan State female student was raped and she tried to press charges. Her chase for dismissed, she was expelled from school. People had this misconception that rape victims “asked for it(the rape)” to happen.
-97%of Southern and 90% of Northern White opposed Interracial relations.
-A black man could get killed for looking at a white woman, but a White man could rape and have a Black woman as his mistress.
-Let’s not for get segregation!
-3/4ths of Whites opposed to having a Black neighbor.
-Black and White couldn’t live in the same areas, In 1957 some 60,000 people lived in the suburb of Levittown, Pennsylvania, and they were all White.
vtjames7433-Most people in these “nuclear families” were unhappy. In the 1950s Redbook ran an article about young mothers felling trapped in marriage and they received letter from 24,000 women who were unhappy with their marriages.
