Could someone give me (relatively) unbiased information on the psychological effects of smoking tobacco?

Question by chalix: Could someone give me (relatively) unbiased information on the psychological effects of smoking tobacco?
I cannot seem to find any information on the psychological effects of tobacco smoking that doesn’t come from a quit-smoking “self help” website. I understand that it is associated with many diseases and is highly addictive and everything else that has been preached to me since I was five years old.

I just want to know what short-term affects it has on the brain. I’m curious how people typically feel after a cigarette.

smoking a cigarette is ‘relieving’…that is, it only appears to be because of the slight withdrawl we experience from the last cigarette we smoked. smoking is all mental—when you really focus on it you realize it does nothing for you. I had quit for 3 weeks and then fell back into it for the past week. The past few days my average heartrate has been around 90bpm and I have been very anxious…i think the cigs had something to do with this.
