Why would any mother let someone lay a hand on their child or even participate in the abuse?

Question by kirstie: Why would any mother let someone lay a hand on their child or even participate in the abuse?
I was reading in the newspaper today of a 6 month old boy that died from severe abuse. “Police said he suffered several skull fractures, broken ribs and other injuries. They also said there were signs of extensive sexual abuse.”

How could anyone do this to a child. If the mom didn’t participate she must have known something was going on. How could she let that happen. I am so upset and disgusted by this. As a mom, my worst fear is something happening to my child. I would give up my life over and over to protect them. I just don’t know how a mom could do this or watch it happen.

We live in a very selfish world that is full of sin. People are more concerned with themselves and their own well-being and desires, than the health and welfare of those they are supposed to protect.
