Italian: How do u know when to use “I” and when to use “Gli”?

Question by extrasz: Italian: How do u know when to use “I” and when to use “Gli”?
Like in the sentences I bambini magiano and Gli uomini leggano.

Why is one using “I” and the other “Gli”?

Please help…
Also what does “loro” mean???

“i” is the plural article that comes before most masculine words
Example: “i genitori” = “the parents”

“gli” is the plural masculine article that comes before masculine words that start with vowels, z, or s+consonant
Example: “gli zii” = “the aunts and uncles (or the uncles)”
“gli amici” = “the friends”

loro means “they”
